Joey Souls is Thinking about Her

Today’s artist discovery article is about the up and coming artist, Joey Souls. I don’t know anything about him except that he has a powerful voice that I discovered while looking up R&B/Soul songs. After doing a bit of research, I found out that he’s fairly new to releasing music on streaming, but that doesn’t mean he sacrifices on quality. He started releasing music during the pandemic with his 2020 hit So Right, and followed it up with a 2021 single, and his highest streamed song, Ooh. In 2022, Souls picked up the pace releasing two singles, his latest, Chocolate, and the song that I discovered on my new music binge, Her. Her currently stands as his most popular song on Spotify and for good reason. It is a not so subtle melodic banger that is perfect summer music, and the formula for accumulating fans from both the elder and current generation of listeners.

It starts off with a familiar melody; Beatriz Fernandez sampled Suzanne Vega’s Tom’s Diner for his harmonies throughout the song, giving the feeling that you already know this song. If you haven’t heard that song in particular, there are many songs that have sampled it. The quickest song that comes to mind is I Get Paper by Kevin Cossom and Drake. The sample is only the beginning, it keeps you intrigued until Souls’ lyrics take over.

The song is about the admiration and desire of a girl (her) and he delivers it in a way that’s in your face and pleasing to the ears. Joey Souls, like I mentioned earlier, has a powerful voice and he can really “sang”. His delivery of runs and harmonies makes me question why he hasn’t made it to the mainstream yet. His voice reminds me of a young Justin Timberlake complete with the Timberland-ish beat. Joey Souls, remember the name, because you’re going to be hearing about it a lot soon.
