Corey Yanks is Being Himself

Corey Yanks is an artist hailing from Spokane, Washington by way of Southern California, who started his musical journey in 2016. He has been releasing consistently since the start of the year with Be Me being his latest single. He draws inspiration from many places, as well as artists, including XXXTENTACION and Travis Scott, even though I don’t hear those influences in Be Me in particular, more on that later. Not that it matters, but Corey is white, and with his ethnicity as a rapper comes stigmas about who he actually is and how he lives his life as compared to his artistic output, that’s where Be Me comes into play.

The song is a self love anthem for Yanks and for anyone listening and is a testament that Yanks is who he says he is. Within the song, it's clear that he is addressing his detractors with lyrics like “Call me fake, but I’m real, you see me,” in the first verse. The song is not just made for Yanks to appreciate though. Anyone could draw inspiration from the song as it is relatable and down to earth.

As far as how the song sounds, I mentioned Yanks’ influences earlier including XXXTENTACION and Travis Scott, but I would have to say that song was inspired by the west coast, with the simple, yet groovy beat and a mix of straight forward and syncopated flows executed by Yanks. Be Me has a vibe about it that could be slightly inspired by the northern west coast, the Bay, Southern California or probably a mix of all three. That’s not even mentioning the contribution from Stoned Produce favorite, JBadge. Of course he brought Cali to the track, as he always does on his features. This time though, he delivered a different flow than I’m used to with him, switching to a spacious, but precise flow full of the swagger that I am used to.

In summary, if you have doubters or haters that judge you before getting to know you and your story, and if it's getting to you, definitely crank Be Me up to eleven as it was made for you. Follow Corey Yanks’ lead and be proud of who you are, and enjoy the song because it is an easy listen and candy for the ears. Keep up with both Corey Yanks and JBadge on Instagram and follow them on Spotify so that you don’t miss anything new from these up and coming talents.
